I know a bunch of MIT grads that live in Somerville. I personally live in North Cambridge pretty close to Somerville. Really, I feel like as long as you're within reasonably close distance to the red line somewhere between, like, the stops of Davis and Charles/MGH you should be fine (although housing gets more expensive as you get closer to the city of Boston).
