Anna Matveyevna changed her patronymic to Pavlovna when she started performing on stage. Students of the Imperial Ballet School in Marius Petipa's Un conte de fées. A ten-year-old Anna Pavlova participated in this work in her first ever ballet performance. She is photographed here on the left holding the birdcage.

Anna Pavlova, Russian ballerina, the most-celebrated dancer of her time. Pavlova studied at the Imperial School of Ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre from 1891, joined the Imperial Ballet in 1899, and became a prima ballerina in 1906. In 1909 she went to Paris on the historic tour of the Ballets

After seeing a production of The Sleeping Beauty at age 8, she decided she wanted to become a ballerina. Two years later, she enrolled at the Imperial Theatre School in Saint Petersburg. Her instructors included Enrico Cecchetti, known for the Cecchetti technique. After studying for eight years, she debuted with the company in 1899.

Anna was accepted into the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School, after passing the entry exam exceptionally well. At the time, Anna was 10 years old. Jan 1, 1892

She lived at the boarding school of the Imperial Ballet until her graduation at the age of 18. Tamara Karsavina and 'Matilda Kshesinskaya' were among her classmates. Pavlova made her debut on September 19, 1899 and worked with the Mariinsky Ballet from 1899 to 1907. She shared the role of Gizelle with 'Matilda Kshesinskaya'.

Born Anna Matveevna Pavlova on January 31, 1881 (o.s.), in St. Petersburg; died of pneumonia in The Hague, the Netherlands, on January 23, 1931; illegitimate daughter of Lazar Jacovlevich Poliakov (an aristocratic banker) and Liubov Fedorovna Pavlova (a laundress); attended Imperial Ballet School, 1891–99; reputedly married Victor Dandré, in 1914; no children.

She and her mother were very poor, and they spent the summers with Anna's grandmother. According to Pavlova, she wanted to be a dancer from the age of eight, when she attended a performance of The Sleeping Beauty at the Maryinsky Theatre. Two years later she was accepted as a student at St. Petersburg's Imperial Ballet School.
